Black History Month Bologna

by: Bologna Municipality of Bologna Culture Agenda – February 20, 2020

On the strength of its Florentine successes, in 2020 Black History Month also arrives in Bologna for its first edition. Almost a century later than the first embryonic developments in the United States, this initiative crossed the ocean to land in Florence in 2016, thus giving Italy the pride of being among the first European countries to host it. Orchestrated and directed by Patrick Joel Tatcheda Yonkeu, the first edition of Black History Month Bologna, to be held during the month of February, intends to expand the network established by Black History Month Florence in its four years of activity, paving the way for a flowering of events across the nation.

The Bolognese initiative, in conjunction with the 5th Florentine edition, will be articulated around the word Obbligato . This theme wants to invite reflection on social obligations, letting oneself be inspired by the use of the term in the jazz context, where it indicates a melody that develops parallel to the main one, with the same importance. Obbligato echoes our human commitment, our social and moral obligations, as well as the desire to narrate the cultural fabric of which we are part. The initiative intends to involve the city in a month dedicated to history, or rather to the stories of black cultures, providing them with spaces that enhance their expression. It will be a collection of voices, conceived as a multifaceted prism to facilitate research and intercultural dialogue. Our goal is to create a series of cultural and educational events dedicated to Afro-descendant cultures and people, relying on the support of various local institutions that are already committed to promoting activities and proposals consistent with our project.

The scheduled events and activities will involve various areas of the city and will touch many areas: art exhibitions , theatrical performances , film screenings , Afro dance workshops , conferences , concerts , workshops and food stands will be on the agenda.
